About HOPE XXL

What is the goal of HOPE XXL?

HOPE XXL wants for all people now and in the future to live in a sustainable, safe and free world. A world where everyone can achieve good quality of life. To achieve this, a lot needs to change. That is why HOPE XXL drafted the Liemers List: a manifesto containing the vision of young people on the future. We aim to present this manifesto to the United Nations General Assembly. They will be asked to take the lead in implementing the Liemers List, ensuring a future where up to 9 billion people can live together in harmony.

Who are the young people of HOPE XXL?

The young people of HOPE XXL are all young people who think along about the Liemers List and support HOPE XXL on the way to the United Nations. Young people from all over the Netherlands, and far beyond, share their vision on the future and support HOPE XXL. Together they form a group of people who can change the world!

How is HOPE XXL organised?

HOPE XXL was started by ten young people. They are still involved with HOPE XXL, just like many others who have since then joined HOPE XXL. The HOPE XXL Foundation is set up to run the daily activities of HOPE XXL. A small team of dedicated people work for the Foundation and execute its programs.

Who wrote the Liemers List?

The very first Liemers List was written by the ten people who started HOPE XXL. They all had their roots in the Liemers region in The Netherlands. After presenting the Liemers List HOPE XXL became a national initiative. Thousands of young people gave their feedback. A number of experts also gave their input on their field of expertise. Based on all of this, the 50 most active young people in HOPE XXL together drafted the national Liemers List. This is the version which you can now find on our website.

Who decides what’s in the Liemers List?

Anyone can give input to the Liemers List. You can do this by responding to items in the list or by contacting us through the website or through Facebook. We regularly update the Liemers List based on the input we receive.

Will the Liemers List be adjusted?

Yes it will! The list you can view now is the Dutch Liemers List. This year we developed the European Liemers List, and we will continue to develop the global version.

What about all those young people who haven’t had the chance to give input?

HOPE XXL wants to give as many people as possible the opportunity to give input. That’s why we visit schools and festivals and organize HOPE XXL events. Anyone who hasn’t given their input, still can. After finishing the global Liemers List, it will remain open to adjustments. Input can always be given.

How will HOPE XXL formulate the European and the Global Liemers List?

In 2012 young people from all over Europe developed the European Liemers List. The global Liemers List will be developed in 2013 – 2014 and later presented to the United Nations.

Why does HOPE XXL aim to present the Liemers List to the United Nations?

The United Nations is the main forum for international cooperation. Almost all countries in the world are united. Cooperation takes place on issues such as international law, global security, human rights, economics and development. The (reformed) United Nations will be asked to take the lead in implementing the Liemers List. Moreover, we are facing challenges that need solutions beyond the national level. To conclude: the United Nations is the best place to present our vision on the future.

Who is going to implement the Liemers List?

The United Nations, as the main forum for international cooperation, will be asked to take the lead in implementing the Liemers List. This can imply that the UN drafts resolutions or arranges meetings where the implementation of the Liemers List is arranged. But the UN cannot do it alone. Governments, civilians, businesses: everyone has a role to play. Because together we hold the future in our hands.

What are the chances that the UN will actually implement the Liemers List?

When HOPE XXL just started, chances were slim that the UN would implement the Liemers List. But we have had important successes since then. We are quickly becoming an international initiative. Our Council of Recommendation and our partners support us on our way to the UN. With your support, we can ensure that our voices are heard at the UN.

Will HOPE XXL continue after the presentation at the UN?

HOPE XXL aims for every person in the world to value their own life as ‘good’. That’s why the young people of HOPE XXL drafted the Liemers List, which will be presented to the United Nations. But it doesn’t stop there. The UN will be asked to take the lead in implementing the Liemers List. Depending on the process in the coming years, it will be determined which role HOPE XXL will take up.

Will HOPE XXL participate in implementing the Liemers List?

HOPE XXL aims to already give meaning to the items in the Liemers List, for example by using sustainable products. When the UN starts implementing the Liemers List everyone gets a role: businesses, governments, civilians and civil society. Whether HOPE XXL will play a special part in this process will be determined at a later stage.
